This is a list of books, articles, and newsletters on ALL TYPES of tipi information.  It ranges from how to build a tipi, what goes in one, contemporary issues, historical material and anything else I can find.  If there is other information out there, please send the information to tipisholley@yahoo.com.  We will do our best to post it in a timly manner.

Lodge Owners Society or Lodge Owners Quarterly or The Lodge Owners Newsletter....First tipi glossy magazine or newsletter to be put out for tipi owners and those interested in tipis.  Had black and white photos, articles, hints, lists of tipi owners, builders, encampments, adds, food recipes and how to articles.  It ran from April 1975 to June of 1978.  Published out of Rockville, South Dakota then to White Creek, Tenn. and then in Oklahoma.  Was a good magazine for one printed before the computer self publishing era of today.


The Canvas Tipi - How to make and pitch your own canvas tipi.  Includes a special section on the selection and preparation of tipi poles.   Written by Jamie Jackson and published by: Lodgepole Press, 1073 Via Alta Lafayette, CA 94549.   Great little book on building tipis with good drawings, step by step instructions, clear pictures, transportation of poles, and where to get materials.  Highly recommend this book.  Written in the early 1980s.  Library of congress number 82-81156


The All American, do it yourself, Portable Shelter by G. D. Wood.  Published article in a magazine called "The Aquarian Angel" around  the year of 1973.  Very out of print.  Wonderful article on making tipis with clear directions.  Takes Laubins goes into more detail.  Great for the first time or home builder of a tipi.  "Darry" or Guy Wood is going to produce this article into a book format with more information.  He is one of the top making tipi people in the country, for those who want to live in a lodge full time.  Craftsmanship is the best.


The 20th. Century Indian Tipi - How to choose and use a Tipi Today by Frank Pond Reese.  A nice basic book for setting up, buying, transportation, poles, canvas, living information in different types of weather, and setting it up.    info@reesetipis.com   


The Plains Indian Tipi, Build it and Move In...Mother Earth News, Vol. 1, No. 1, January, 1970.  Nice pictures and information on building a tipi.  You can build a tipi from the plans. site of article


The Cheyenne Women's Sewing Society - by Winfield W. Coleman.  Taken from the seminars at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming.  Wonderful article on Cheyenne covers and decorations of the last 200 years.  Before you decorate a Cheyenne lodge, you need to read this.


The Arapaho - by Kroeber.  Wonderful book on Arapaho life on the plains with many drawings and information. Must have book for the historical researcher on tipis.


Murals in the Round, Painted Tipis of the Kiowa and Kiowa-Apache Indians - by John C. Ewers.  Stock number 047-003-00062-8, Smithsonian Institution 1978.  Great book on painted covers that were commissioned by Mooney.  First tipi cover was collected in 1891.  His field notes are located at  NAA Kiowa anthropological illustrations


The Tipi: Traditional Native American Shelter - by Adolf Hungrywolf  Published 2006...120 fascinating vintage photographs of tipis and the North American cultures that created them - many from the 1880s and 1890s. The text presents an in-depth look at the use of tipis from historic sources. Interesting new book with new additions from his original book on tipi

Storm Maker's Tipi.....by Paul Goble.   ISBN  0-689-84137-X   Great little book that covers the four pole tipi.  If you do not own a Goble book, you should get one.  They are highly illustrated and based a good information.


The Tipi-A Center of Native American Life....by David and Charlotte Yue.   ISBN 0-394-86177-9 published 1984.  A nice little book on the basics of tipis which cover the out side and inside  of a lodge.   


Denver Art Museum...Leaflet No.19, April, 1931...The Plains Indian Tipi.  Nice four page pamphlet on the buffalo hide tipi.


Painted Tipis by Contemporary Plains Indian Artists...exhibition organized by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board of the U.S. Dept. of the interior. Lib. of Cong. Card Num. 73-89447, 1973.  Contemporary  as well as historical painted covers.  Great picture of an interior tipi and old time brush fence for outside windy cold weather.


Women and Warriors of the Plains-The Pioneer Photography of Julia E. Tuell...by Dan Aadland.  isbn0-87605-784-2   Turn of the century photos of Cheyenne lodges and life.  Some Sioux pictures.


Domestic Architecture in the Comanche Village on Medicine Creek, Indian Territory, Winter 1872-73.....By Thomas W. Kavanagh.  Article on Comanche tipis and village life.  Comes from the internet and is several pages of great research.  http://php.indiana.edu/~tkavanag/asoule.html.


Southwest Museum Leaflet....number 6..Painted Tipis and Picture-Writing of the Blackfoot Indians....by Walter McClintock.  Southwest Museum, Highland Park-Los Angeles, California.  Very informative little book on the decorations of Blackfoot covers.  Goes into designs and symbols of the Blackfoot.

Tipi Tinklers...by Louis Garcia...Whispering Wind Magazine..Vol30 no2/1999 Great article on the dangles that are seen on many Sioux lodges.  How too and historical information.  Highly recommend this information if you are making these items.  There will be more information on dangles located on the Dangle page, to be set up later.

The Four Winds Guide to Indian Artifacts...by Preston E. Miller and Carolyn Corey. There are two books on on how to buy Indian Art.  Great information to those interested in artifacts of all types. Buy this book. Also want to thank Carolyn and Preston for letting me use pictures from their book.

The Indian Tipi "Castle of the Plains"....by Earl Past.. "American Indian Crafts and Culture"  February 1973,  Vol. 7 No. 2. Good pictures of historic insides of Arapaho lodges. 


"Indianishe Zeltbemalung"  by EinfÜhrung und Erläuterungen von Wolfgang de Bruyn und Helmut Peterson  ISBN3-7354-0031-0 Wonderful little book from German showing painted tipis and designs.  Many pictures of covers.  It is in German, but has an area of English.  The title is about painting your tipi.


Das Tipi der Plainsindianer Margret Zalfen....ISBN  3-924696-43-8  Small book on how to make a tipi.

 


Táboríme V Týpí..by Jiri Macek a kol....ISBN80-900223-0-8    If anyone can read Czech, this is not a bad little book.  It has some great pictures and more references to camping.


Southwest Museum Leaflets...number 5..The Blackfoot Tipi by Walter McClintock. Little booklet on Blackfoot tipis and materials.


The Sioux of the Rosebud, a History in Pictures...by John A. Anderson. ISBN 0-8061-0953-X.  Great book for turn of the century photos.


The Crow Indians...by Robert H. Lowie.  Crow history with information on Crow tipis and life. Few photographs, but good drawings.  Originally published in 1935.


The Tipi as an Element in the emergence of Historic Plain Indian Nomadism....by Ted J. Brasser.    Plains Anthropologist..1982 27-98 Pt.1


Crow Indian Photographer-the Work of Richard Throssel...by Peggy Albright.  Another good book showing traditional tipis and camps. 


The Crows...by Fred E. Miller.  Photographer of the Crows. Has great pictures on tipis and camps.


Blackfeet Crafts....by Ewers. 1945 United States Department of the Interior.  Has information on Blackfoot covers and crafts.  Good historical items and photos.


Chief Washakie and an Eastern Shoshoni Camp...Photo Analysis by Allen Chronister.  Whispering Wind Magazine...Vol. 29/ No 3/ 1998.


The Sioux...by Royal B. Hassrick.  ISBN0 0-8061-0607-7  first published in 1947.  Written information with good drawings of material culture.  Great section on tipis and tipi life.


The Blackfeet-Artist of the Northern Plains...by Bob Scriver.  Large book on Blackfeet art work with a section tipis.  All in color with good background on tipi designs.


Plains Indian History and Culture-essays on Continuity and Change....by John C. Ewers.ISBN0-8061-2862-3    Some good information on culture with a some great information on tipis, a few pages.  These essays go into dress, men and women clothing, daily life, and material culture.

The tipi in the Early 1800s...What about the Outside?...by Susan Jennys.   "Muzzleloader Magazine" January/February 1996.  What to look for in the designs, paintings and decorations for a traditional period tipi covers.  Good information for all interested in putting designs on your cover in the early period of the 19th. century.  


Tipi Life...by Adolf Hungry Wolf.  A Good Medicine Book © 1972.  Interesting information on Blackfeet tipis with some construction information. 


Tipi Life.....by William D. and Thomas E. Thulin    No date given or ISBN numbers.  Looks like a self publish little book on how to make a tipi and probably published in the last 30 or so years?  Has some interesting drawings.


Paul Goble...not a book but a person.  His children's' books are full of lovely pictures of old style lodge cover designs.  You can get many of these books from Aladdin Press at 1230 Ave. of the Americas, New York, NY 10020.  Many of the trading posts have copies and there are several books.

How To Set Up A Blackfoot Lodge...by Brian Cannavaro...Anyone who has ever put up a Blackfeet Tipi will tell you that detailed instructions on how to set up a Blackfoot Lodge are worth their weight in gold.

The Ultimate Mobile Home...by Gay Neale.  "The Indian Trader" Volume ten, number ten, October, 1979.  Basic historical information on lodges.  Some good drawings and pictures.


Tipi...by Charlotte Berry.  "Cowboys and Indians" magazine.  Has some nice photos.


A Tipi Dedication...by Scott Thomson.  Whispering Wind Magazine...Spring 1982.


The Indian Tipi...Lance H. Wuellner.  "Muzzle Blasts" magazine, November 1986.  Another article on how to set up a tipi. 


Yourtes et Tipis by Isabelle Bruno.   This book is written for the modern day Nomadic.  It is not a "how to" but a "how about" the people who make and live in these styles of tent.  It is in French and has a page on Richard Reese of Reese tipis and a page on me.  The book is mostly about the European tipi owners and makers.


A Short Visit to a Tipi...Parts One and Two...by Tony Hunter.  Muzzleloader Magazine, January/February 1999.  Historical information on tipis which is geared more to the rendezvous.


Taming A Tepee, A Western Fantasy in Aspen...by Dena Kaye.  Architectural Digest, August 1994.  Nice article on a modern day tipi set up for very modern living.  There are couches, lamps, rugs and a stone build fire place in the middle.  Tipi is 28' in diameter...big one with all the furniture inside.

"THE TENT BOOK" BY E.M. HATTON....1979...0395276136...Houghton Mifflin Co; (June 1970)out of print....has about two pages on tipi material you would find in other books.


Tipi Living- A Simple Living Series Book......by Patrick Whitefield.   ISBN 1 85623 0163   Written in 1987 in England.  Nice little book on choosing and living in a tipi. 


Circle Houses-Yurts, Tipis and Benders...By David Pearson.  ISBN 1-890132-86-1.  Can be found on internet at www.chelseagreen.com.    Published in 2001.  Very similar to the Tipi and the Yurt book.  Not for tipi makers, but nice for you Yurt people.  Has some nice pictures.


Building Tipis and the Yurts.....  The Yurt part looks great.  But putting a tipi up on a rocky area to camp is not showing practical knowledge of safe tipi camping.


Make You Own Tipi....by James Jones. Not an easy book to follow or build a tipi. Many strange new words and lacks good illustrations for the information. Could have been a better book with more drawings and research.   Stick with Laubin.  Book seems not to be on the market.  No longer in publication!! 

 


Tipi Living...Quarterly Magazine of the Tipi Living and Camping. Should get four issues a year for 20.00$.  I have only seen three in two years.  Still will not send my fourth issue or renew subscription.   About 1/3 is on tipi material and the rest on Sioux language, Kid stuff, and other information.  If you are already a knowledgeable person with tipis.......... this magazine is good for the pictures.  NO LONGER IN PUBLICATION!!


A Plains Indian's Talking Tipi...by Dixie Lewellyn.  ISBN 1-879813-75-0.  More of a child's book with Lewellyn copying the drawings out of Mails book.  No new information.


Mystic Warriors of the Plains....by Mails, Thomas E.  Big book on a lot of Native American information.  Most of it is taken from other writers as well as the pictures, upon which he copied his drawings.  Small section on tipis, but not how to build.  It is a good book for all the information.
